Famigliare, perché racconta la storia di una famiglia ebraica e antifascista, i Levi, a Torino tra gli anni Trenta e i Cinquanta del Novecento. E Lessico perché le strade della memoria passano attraverso il ricordo di frasi, modi di dire, espressioni gergali. Scrive la Ginzburg: "Noi siamo cinque fratelli. Abitiamo in città diverse, alcuni di noi stanno all'estero: e non ci scriviamo spesso. Quando c'incontriamo, possiamo essere, l'uno con l'altro, indifferenti, o distratti. Ma basta, fra noi, una parola. Basta una parola, una frase, una di quelle frasi antiche, sentite e ripetute infinite volte, nel tempo della nostra infanzia. Ci basta dire 'Non siamo venuti a Bergamo per fare campagna' o 'De cosa spussa l'acido cloridrico', per ritrovare a un tratto i nostri antichi rapporti, e la nostra infanzia e giovinezza, legata indissolubilmente a quelle frasi, a quelle parole".

Very enjoyable

If you are learning Italian and are of an intermediate standard then I would thoroughly recommend this book. I have now read quite a few of Natalia Ginzburg's books (in Italian) and have enjoyed them all but this remains my favourite.For the most part its set in Turin - a city I love and so it was interesting to read place names etc. that I recognised. It is set in the run up to the WWII in the time of Mussolini and so turbulent times. It also feels like her 'coming of age'.Its a good and interesting read.If you are learning Italian then this is a great book to have a go at reading.

Excellent literary style

An italian literary classic describing lif under Fascism in pre-war Italy. The narrative style is unusual and effective ,largely based on the idiosyncratic characteristcs of the family and their catch-phrases.

Sketchy

Starts off well, and with an original approach to the subject mater - family relationships seen through the prism of its own peculiar language. The words, phrases, references, and songs specific to a close-knit group of people. Characters are vivid and memorable, but as the book goes on it doesn't really develop beyond a series of character sketches - plot developments, such as they are, are perfunctory and secondary in importance. Worth reading the first 50 or so pages, though.
