The experience of Therese as a young girl, a wife and a mother, having to abide to social pressures and implicit demands of society. A tragic impossibility to communicate her inner feelings which eventually lead to an explosion of her sufferings through her act of "poisoining"towards Bernard, her husband. The intricacy of her character is amazing. Francois Mauriac has tried through Therese to present a class of women who exist everywhere around us...A great book that I recommend to all...Have a good reading.
13 of 13 people found the following review helpful. An interesting, inspiring and perhaps moving french novel
By Sam - (delboy_trotter@hotmail.com)
Therese Desqueyroux is a nonconformist young woman in the Les Landes region of France where the resin from pines is farmed. Bored of the traditional way of life and the restrictions that being a female in the early 1900s brought, Therese 'experiments' with life, leading to her trial for the apparent attempted murder of her husband. I have studied this book as an A-level French text and found it thoroughly enjoyable. There are many themes throughout the novel such as masks and silence, which demonstrate the feeling towards the way of life and responsibilities in an 'honourable' family. Mauriac uses the weather and scenery to great effect in exposing the attitudes and emotions of the characters. Psychology plays a major part in the expression of personality in this novel, as the true face of the characters is often described as being 'masked'. This book could be inspiring to some and moving for others, but in general it is an interesting read and especially fun for those whom enjoy the challenge of reading in French.
